What do I need to do to become a course rep?

Your department will organise the election of representatives for every course that the university offers, and these are usually held in the first few weeks of term. Make yourself known to your departmental administrator and get your classmates to vote for you, then raise their issues and concerns to the powers that be within your department.

Attend training - which gives you an opportunity to meet other reps and to find out the main student issues.

Identify student issues and needs in your department by making yourself known to your students.

Attend departmental meetings to communicate these issues on behalf of students and to negotiate with the staff.

Liaise with other relevant bodies - the Students’ Union, other reps in your department and the advice centre.

Remember, there is a support network for you as reps. First, through your rep colleagues and your faculty convenor and then the VP Academic and Welfare in the SU. They are there to provide support for you so use them!

Report back on meetings to students, your convenor and also to the SU
