Free Thinkers

Free Thinkers Society

Nothing is freer than thought.

This society exists as a forum for discussing ethics, tradition, science and superstition from a secular perspective. We aim to provide a safe sphere for open debate about sensitive controversial issues, encouraging members to think critically and form arguments based upon fact and empirical evidence.

In the past the society has discussed and debated issues, such as:

- The positives and negatives of organised religion
- The positives and negatives of having no religion
- Freedom of speech and the concept of ultimate freedom
- Tolerance, intolerance and discrimination
- Religious festivals: modern meaning and significance to those from other or no religious background
- Costs and benefits of holistic therapies

And held some great social events both on and off campus, including:

- Film night
- Pub quizzes
- Quazar!
- Bowling
- Christmas meal

This year we hope to continue our weekly meetings on campus, which are held on Thursday nights between 7 and 9pm (the room location is emailed to members on a weekly basis), where we discuss and debate matters amongst ourselves, but also to introduce activities, such as:

- Large debates with other societies
- Regular film nights
- Lots more fantastic social events!

We encourage our members to join the University of Essex Free Thinkers Society facebook page to keep up to date with topics and events.

If you have any questions about the society or have a suggestion for a conversation/debate topic please get in touch and let us know! Please forward your general comments and queries to our President, Dan Fisher (dfishe@essex.ac.uk).
