Environmental Protection

The Environmental Society continues into its 2nd year, with even more ambition, enthusiasm and a load of ideas for change and awareness raising.

We continue our weekly film screenings in conjunction with the interdisciplinary Centre for Environment and Society (iCES). Please find a list of all the films we are showing during autumn and spring term on our 'Events' page. The series runs every Thursday, 6.30pm in 4.311, with follow-up discussions. As always, admission free. All welcome.

Our informal discussions also function as our weekly meetings discussing not only the film but all sorts of environment related topics which might prey on people's minds. Besides this we would like to focus more strongly on action than mere talking. We want to organise monthly “days of action” offering a variety of workshops, a trip to the Apricot centre, bicycle tours, volunteering at local community gardens and awareness-raising events. We want these “days of action” to be open to all students and are therefore still looking for keen and enthusiastic people who would like to get involved in putting these events together. This can be a one-off or long-term commitment. If you are interested please email environmentessex@gmail.com, or come to one of our film screenings to talk to us.

Besides, we want to press more actively for change within the microcosm of our uni. The Green League's University Ranking 2011 has revealed that University of Essex only comes in 68th place regarding environmental policy and performance, so there's still a lot of room for improvement! Check it out and compare to some of the first class universities here: http://peopleandplanet.org/green-league-2011/table . How did for example Nottingham&Trent or Gloucestershire achieve their high standards of environmental performance? How can we learn from them and turn our uni into a greener and more sustainable place? We want to come up with ideas, plans and schemes to enhance Essex' environmental performance. We are not interested in helping to greenwash the University's image, but in real change!

If you think you've got some good ideas, or you noticed something environmentally unfriendly on campus that you would like to see changed, again, please contact us via environmentessex@gmail.com.

We are looking forward to see you on Thursdays, and to get active with us!
