ABOUT ADVICE CENTRAL SOUTHEND EAST 15 CONTACT US

We can advise students of their consumer rights. We can also write to companies on students behalf and help students once all their attempts have proven fruitless.

We are able to provide basic advice about paying and reclaiming tax.

Students do not pay council tax unless a member of the household is a non-student. We can advise students of where they stand and how to get a council tax exemption certificate.

We can give practical advice about setting up accounts, paying bills etc.

All properties must have a TV licence, including all University residences. We can advise on this.

· A TV licence is not required if the TV set or video recorder is not used or cannot receive/record authorised broadcast programmes. For example, if the television is used for closed circuit monitoring, to play electronic games, to watch pre-recorded videos or DVD’s or uses the television as a computer monitor.

· If you live in Halls of Residence and use a television (or broadcast receiving equipment) in your own room, you will need your own separate TV licence.

· If you share a house with other students and your room is separately occupied (e.g. you have separate tenancy agreements) you will need your own TV licence if you use a television in your own room. If the television or equipment is only being used in a communal area then only one licence is required for the house.

· If you share a house with other students and use a TV in your own room but the house can be treated as one place shared by you all (e.g. you have a joint tenancy agreement) then only one TV licence is required for the house.

· A valid TV licence is required if you use (or ‘install with the intention to use’) television receiving equipment such as television sets, video recorders, set top boxes or PC’s with broadcast cards.
