Drawing their inspiration from traditional Cuban songs, seven young musicians came together in the 1990s to create music with a contemporary edge. Staying true to an acoustic base they developed a fresh sound with inventive songwriting and soulful groove.

Thurs 20 Oct Out of Slavery' Nardia Foster

As part of Global Dignity Day, the university is delighted to welcome Nardia Foster, author of Out of Slavery: the History of British Black Caribbean People. Explore the history and identity of black Caribbean people in Britain. Creative pieces produced during the workshop will be on display at the Black History Month Fair at the university on 29th October.

Exhibition finale presented by Lawrence Walker, Chairman of Colchester Black Month 2011 with Special Guest Nardia Foster, the author of "Out of Slavery" The History of British Black Caribbean people in the United Kingdom workshop, Lecture and Book Review.

Sun 23 Oct, 11am Miles for Smiles' Charity Walk

A chance to walk a course around the outskirts of the town of either 5 miles or 10 miles and raise funds for favourite charity. Everyone's invited to support the cause.

Tues 25 Oct, 1pm African Diaspora on the culture of Latin America

All members of the university and the local community are warmly invited to this informal lunchtime session to mark Black History Month. Drawing on the University's leading-edge research in the area, participants will have the chance to explore the impact of the African Diaspora on the culture of Latin America.

Fri 28 Oct, 7.30pm An African Affair

Come and taste the world with an evening of African food and variety of entertainment celebrating African spirit and beauty, ranging from eclectic talents in spoken words with London based poets such as Leeto, Obe from RADA and Amanda (Essex Uni's resident poets) to soulful harmonies sang by the beautiful voice of "Nandi" a talented singer/songwriter from Zimbabwe, with a stunning array of African dishes to sample, dancers and other goodies to ensure an extravaganza.

Sat 29 Oct, 1pm University of Essex Students' Union Black History Month Fair

A fantastic, family-friendly event to end Black History Month. The day will include: live music from reggae to steel band; stalls with food, clothes and other culturally diverse items; and attractions for children.
