alcohol awareness

tiger drinkingAlthough alcohol is seen as more socially acceptable, please remember that alcohol…

• Is still classed as a drug
• Has claimed the lives of more young people than cocaine, heroin and every other illegal drug combined
• Is linked to 9 different kinds of cancer including mouth, liver, stomach and colon

A shocking 100 people are admitted to hospital for alcohol related liver disease EVERY day!

So, you have come here to study, yet after a big night out you don’t feel up to your lectures the next day, how can you avoid that hangover feeling?...

• Eat before you start drinking
• Use mixers to dilute the alcohol
• Drink water/soft drinks between drinks
• Drink at least a pint of water before going to bed
• Alcohol lowers the blood sugar levels, so eat as soon as you can – bananas, cereal or egg on toast are all good!
• Or obviously don’t drink!

Too much can only be a good thing?

After a few you may develop beer goggles, but how do you really look and what effect does alcohol really have on your body?

• Slurring of words, staggering, falling over etc is really not that attractive!
• Drinking too much can actually cause people to have little accidents!
• There are so many calories in alcohol that lead to the ‘beer belly’ effect
• Alcohol causes man boobs
• Not everything grows - alcohol can also cause penis shrinkage!
• It also causes dry skin and really ugly broken veins
• Also alcohol leads to bloodshot eyes
• As you sweat it all out of your system you may start to develop BO

It really is that attractive!

A bottle of wine has 40% of the daily recommended calories for women.  This is equivalent to 3 Mars Bars, a cheese burger and chips or 6 jam doughnuts – which would you rather have?
How to Waste your Money This Freshers Week:

Be Drink Aware!!

Although no one is sure how common drink spiking is due to its very nature, it is a growing problem.  The biggest problems of spiking are caused by Rohpnol, GHB or Katamine, but the most widely used substance is alcohol!  For spiking someone’s drink, even with alcohol and not doing anything can result in up to ten years in prison.

It can and does happen to men to, as 12-15% of reported drug rape victims are male.

Drink spiking does not only involve sexual assault, there are many instances that involved theft, including wallets, phones and on some occasions people being convinced to take out money from a ATM and hand it over with no recollection the next day.

It also doesn’t just happen to people drinking alcohol, the drugs are odourless, colourless and tasteless, and so there is no warning.

YET, the chances of being spiked are small, so don’t lock yourself in your room instead of going out, just be sure to follow these simple guidelines:

• Don’t leave your drink unattended
• Be aware of much alcohol you have drunk
• Don’t accept drinks from strangers, if you do be sure to watch it being opened/poured
• Drink bottled drinks, and cover the top with your thumb or use a spiky
• When out stay in a group and watch out for each other

If you think you may have been spiked then…
• Get help immediately from someone you know and trust.
• Seek medical assistance as soon as possible
• Report to the police, but remember the drugs used leave the system quickly, in most cases the police only have up to 72 hours to test urine.

It not just drinks that get spiked…

Recently there is a worrying trend in the spiking of cigarettes.  This usually involves the filter being soaked in embalming fluid, the result when smoked is instant, yet the effect wont last for long.  Depending on what is used to spike the cigarette varies the outcome, hallucinations, delusions and sometimes unconsciuoness.  Often the purpose will be to make the victim thirsty so that they will then accept a spiked drink.

Our advice is:

Don’t accept cigarettes from strangers!!
