Walking Out-And About

Obviously try to walk in groups, but on those occasions that you have to walk somewhere alone, or for added safety please follow these simple tips:

• Carry a personal attack alarm (available from the Advice Centre and Nightline for only £1!)
• Stick to Busy, well lit places
• Avoid underpasses or short cuts
• Carry bags across your body with any zips or openings closest to you
• Carry laptops in an anonymous bag
• Walk facing oncoming traffic

Best tip of all is to be aware of your surroundings, and if you feel in danger get help!!

Self-defence and the Law

Obviously if the worse does happen you have every right to defend yourself, with reasonable force and you can use items you have on you, such as an umbrella, keys or even hairspray!  But the law doesn’t allow carrying anything that could be deemed as an offensive weapon.

Property

Student property costs on average £900 to replace stolen items and repair damage after a burglary – so don’t let that happen to you, be aware and follow these simple guidelines:

• keep valuables out of sight of windows
• make a list of all valuable items
• mark property with a UV pen

If you travel by bike make sure you take off all removable parts and use a bike lock
