Sexy Pennys ,
Every other Monday,
Level 2/Mondo
Welcome to Sexy Penny's, Essex University’s legendary independent student driven club night….
Since the words Pot Noodle, Rustlers and STI became synonymous with the typical image of a student, promoters and bar owners have for what seems like a depressing eternity served up a similar array of grimness at offending student nights right across the country. In countless bars to countless clubs shockingly bad DJs can be heard buggering the decks, with the sweetest note not too dissimilar to Kewell a Devil’s nails scraping down a blackboard.
In October 2007 a tight group of miphed friends at Essex University threw the towel in; they’d had enough and decided to start organising their own student parties. They had a simple aim, to throw special events that were fun and original but still as cheap as could be. They wanted all the edginess of the underground club scene, they wanted lights and club production that left your eyes twinkling, they wanted prices at the bar that echoed the deals of our northern student brethren and they wanted to make sure they catered for everyone! Students, bored of the status quo, witnessed Sexy Penny’s became a complete hit and has been ever since!
Sexy Penny’s is renowned for pushing the boat out when it comes to its parties. They’ve had faceless zombies on stilts, mad hatter ladies firing sparks into the air with their crazy power tools, ceilings that explode confetti, whole fun fairs and artists such as the Mystery Jets, the list goes on! Whatever happens in the future at Essex, you can be certain that Sexy Penny’s will be at the front, creating those parties where memories are forged!
Disco got humped by Funk, Indie and Electro got married, Prince and Missy Elliot broke the floor and the Cheese was left in France. It wasn’t about the genre; it was about the mix it was about the party, it was about what all the others aren’t…Good music. They’d done what everyone was crying out for, a student party that was Sexy AND saved the Penny’s! The rest as they say…is history.
