How to write a motion?

Motions for Referendum can be submitted by any Full member of the Union with 75 students’ signatures (download form) to The Steering Committee (see below).

Requirements (For main motions)
Motions proposed to Referenda must comply with the following:

i) Individual motions must be no longer than 400 words in total length excluding the title.
ii) Motions must clearly state what the motion resolves for the Union. The title must reflect this. (see example)

Motions submitted must also nominate a category under which it shall be discussed as follows:
(a) Education – for example anything to do with Higher Education within our own Union or Nationally such as Funding Review, Part-time students, Feedback.
(b) Strong & Active Union – for example governance of the union, working with minority and ethnic groups
(c) Welfare – for example housing, community relations, safety on and off campus
(d) Wider Society & Citizenship – for example anything relating to ethical issues, mobilizing for a General Election, Love Music Hate Racism.

Here you will find how to write a motion and the form which needs to be completed with the 75 students’ signatures. No motion may be taken to Referendum that concern the allocation of resources to any current or future student activity group(s).

Also no motion will be accepted if it will have any major financial implications for the Union i.e. 50p a pint in all bar would bankrupt the Union!

What is a motion?

A motion is baically an idea for change, so if you have an idea on what your SU should be doing then you can submit a motion.
Any student at the University of Essex can submit a motion to make change to the Union. It might propose new policy, a different way of representing students, or a change in the way we deliver a service.
The proposals should be ideas that will make a change and benefit all students.

how it works

On Thursday 4th November, every student that submitted a motion gets to encourage students to vote for the change they are suggesting. You'll also be given money towards your campaign so you can spread the word.
