the end 2013
Safety information for 'The End' from the University and the Students' Union
Keeping students safe is the top priority of the University and the Students’ Union.
While we recognise that students want to celebrate the end of exams, at the unofficial celebrations known as 'The End' on Friday June 2013 – which is not under the control of the University or the Students’ Union – the nature of this event raises significant health and safety concerns.

Due to the campus architecture the Squares are reinforced concrete decks which under normal circumstances are structurally safe. There are also steep drops down to the area beneath the Squares.
For this reason we monitor numbers and manage the situation to ensure students remain safe and ensure a number of security measures are in place to ensure crowd capacity on the Squares is kept within safe limits – as follows:
-
To protect students, staff, and University property, all University buildings will be locked and secured by 5pm and University Security staff will be present all evening.
-
Square 5 is also opened up so there will be limited access to Squares 3, 4, and 5 from around 5pm onwards for a maximum capacity of 3,000 people – with a single point of entry to the Squares from Square 5, next to the Albert Sloman Library.
-
Access will be granted only to registered University of Essex students on the production of a valid registration card and alumni with an alumni membership card.
-
To minimise the risk of injury caused by broken glass, no drinks glasses or glass bottles will be allowed on the Squares.
-
To allow easy access to toilets throughout the evening portable toilets will be provided on Square 5.
-
To improve access to facilities for students with disabilities the lift access for wheelchair users will remain available on Square 4 at the 4NW entrance and disabled toilets will be also be provided.
The University and the Students' Union would urge all students to please follow this safety advice and we thank you in advance for your cooperation.
