On-going V-Team Projects

PROJECTS 2009

English Language and Friendship project
Aiding people from minority ethnic groups with their conversational English and bringing them together as a group in a fun and informal setting. Training is provided to ensure that you are able to plan and deliver sessions and teach English as a second language

Global Voices

Creating greater cultural awareness amongst the young people of Colchester and helping challenge stereotypes and negative racial perceptions about minority groups and the “developing world”. International students form a diverse team of “Global Voices” trained to deliver sessions in schools about their culture (e.g. religious traditions, food, dress) and global issues such as poverty.

Art Club
Help run an after-school art club at St Andrew's Infants School. Children take part in art projects too big or messy to do at home. The scheme promotes interaction and play between children and parents. The club is about having lots of fun, with activities such as papier-mâché and painting!

Time Traveller project
– making history come alive for Primary school children.  Students will dress up as historical characters and answer questions from the pupils on the life and times of that character.

Superhero project
– this involves students going into schools and helping children with topics that are relevant in everyday life e.g culture and diet, quizzes etc.

Small World project – develop children’s language and imaginative thinking.  The project lets children enter an imaginary world where they can create characters, develop exciting and unique ideas, and revisit and represent real life experiences.

Numbers Project - Number Partners is a national volunteering scheme that brings together volunteers and schools.  The scheme provides extra help with maths for children aged from 7 to 14.  Volunteers attend a training session, receive their volunteer’s handbook and visit the school to meet their partner children and the teachers. The volunteers are provided with a handbook giving them guidance on how to work with children, a code of conduct, activity and game ideas and a diary to record children’s progress.  It usually involves just giving up an hour each week.

Einstein Project – this is a new project which involves teaching science at a local primary school by making it more interesting.

Golden Age Project
– befriending project for the elderly using the Wii computer games console.

Plus several Sports projects such as Cricket, Hockey, Badminton, Trampolining, Netball and Cheerleaders.
