KPMG Commercial Awareness Skills Session

Event type: Skills session, Case study

Range of skills: commercial awareness, teamwork

Number of attendees: 28

Description: The first event, organized in collaboration with KPMG, touched the theme on Commercial Awareness, a highly valued skill when faced with an interview that most employers look for it, showing students how they can demonstrate it throughout our recruitment process. After reading a few articles about a highly profitable company, the students were asked to do a SWOT analysis, which they found both thrilling and interesting. The interactive, fresh approach was appreciated by students, who took time to attend a long Q&A session at the end of the event.

ICAEW Business Game

 (17 November 2010, 3pm-5pm )

Event type: Business Game, Case study

Range of skills: communication, persuasion and presentation skills, problem solving

Number of attendees: 30

Description: The event proved to be very popular, with 30 students attending. Split in 6 groups, they were given a set of documents, including the starting costs of three franchises, and were asked to act as financial analysts. After examining bank accounts, letters, articles, and a wide variety of documents, students had to decide what franchise would best fit their client. By observing the groups play, anyone could notice the high level of commitment offered for a few hours. The choice of franchise was highly debated by each of the groups, who justified their decision through a 5 minute presentation. Facts, numbers, strong arguments were brought in to sustain each team's choice. Not only were students put in a real life scenario, which they might encounter in their future careers, but students could also develop important skills, such as team work, the ability to deliver presentations, delegating tasks, time management skills, the ability to grasp through information quickly deciding what is relevant. Feedback from students showed they appreciated the interactive side of the game, as well as the way they can test themselves and grow professionally though an accountancy qualification.

Capgemini Technology Consulting and Assessment Centre-type session

 (23 November 2010 )

Event type: Consulting Game, Assessment Centre, Presentation

Range of skills: teamwork, delegating tasks, problem solving, time management

Number of attendees: 20

Description: The event comprised of a challenging and funny interactive consulting game where students could grasp the fundamentals of Consulting, an assessment centre-type exercise and a presentation about Opportunities in Technology Consulting at Capgemini. The “ice-breaker” consulting game helped students accommodate into teams, proceeding afterwards with a group exercise used in assessment centre selection stage. Each of the teams dealt with a case study to solve within a short time period and received feedback on performance. With an ever increasing use of this assessment tool by recruiters, we feel that practicing this type of interaction in a “safe” environment accompanied by a recruiter's feedback and advice offered great support to students in tackling future assessment centre exercises.
