The University of Essex Law Society is the largest society and arguably the most valuable on campus, run by students for law students and non-students alike.  Its aim is to instil in members the discipline and skills required for a successful career and offer a platform to explore and experience new heights. It offers a range of extracurricular activities aimed at developing the necessary and relevant skills to be and remain competitive on a regional, national and international scale. Whether you intend to be a solicitor, barrister, legal executive or pursue a career outside of law, the Law Society offers invaluable benefits in every academic and non-academic activity it runs.

The Society organises Mooting practices and competitions; a MUST for aspiring barristers, helpful for budding solicitors, extremely competitive yet fun and exciting. We hold competitions throughout the year internally and externally and compete against well renowned Universities across the United Kingdom. It is run professionally, giving competitors the feel of a real life court room setting with them putting forward arguments to a judge to make a case for their clients.

The Society also runs a negotiation competitions department, an absolute MUST for everyone intending to pursue any career in any sphere of life as believe it or not we constantly find ourselves negotiating with our colleagues, families or when purchasing an item on a daily basis. What the Society offers members on this platform, is the skill of mastering the art of negotiation, the ethics involved and the most effective way to achieve a set goal on a wide range of issues. This is run professionally to give students a taste of how deals are reached in the real world but also exciting as winners from the internal competitions go ahead to represent Essex externally and win fantastic prizes.

The Society also offers a mentoring scheme aimed at ushering in new undergraduates to a smooth start into university life and offering professional student advice to any university related issues they may have. Mentors are thoroughly trained and mentees can trust their expertise. The Society also offers students an opportunity to do some pro bono work through the Essex Street Law scheme aimed at educating secondary school pupils in the local community on laws that affect our daily lives. Students are well equipped to deal with such pupils by keeping them engaged and making the experience as exciting as possible while imparting in them valuable knowledge.

The Society also offers a platform for members who have an interest in journalism or who just want to improve their writing and analytical skills, through the legal magazine Inter Alia. Inter Alia aims to keep students abreast on what goes on in the legal world, it not only educates and informs but helps build core and transferable skills in its contributors. We also offer a fair amount of career guidance by inviting graduate recruiters to host CV and interview sessions as well as striving to secure open days at regional, national, international law firms and non-law firms alike. It also organises opportunities for members to meet graduate recruiters, trainees and employers of law and non-law firms in an informal setting and through the Law fair organised by the Law School.  These provide a platform for members to gain an invaluable insight into firms and make an informed choice on which career path to follow.

In addition to these activities we run which can majorly be categorised in the academia section, we hold recreational activities in and out of campus and sometimes outside the United Kingdom shores. We host an annual law ball every year, cocktail evenings, Christmas parties, summer barbecues and partner with other Societies to host events. We also have the privilege of partnering with other universities across the UK to organise events and give members an opportunity to meet new people and experience new horizons. These events are aimed at giving members a platform to experience new things, meet people, let their hair down, loosen their ties and get a break from all the serious work throughout the year.

Each year, with each new committee, we strive to make things better than the last, explore more opportunities for members and conquer new grounds. We are keen to hear from any organisation willing to help us achieve our aims and improve the Societies standard through sponsorship and partnership. We are also interested in feedback from members on the progress of the Society and implore anyone interested in participating in the Society to contact us on lawsoc@essex.ac.uk.
