Keeping safe/drink awareness

Drinking for many students becomes a big part of their experience at university. We don’t want to stop your fun, we just want you to be safe, so remember these top tips.
- Make sure you eat something first to line your stomach.
- Keep a close eye on your drink. Be very aware of anyone potentially spiking your drink.
- Drink plenty of water and soft drinks in between alcohol to avoid dehydrating.
- Keep fit and healthy. The average fresher gains 14 pounds of weight due to excessive drinking.
- Drink at least a pint of water before going to bed to make sure you don’t miss that 9AM lecture!
100 young people are admitted to hospital for alcohol related diseases EVERY day! Don’t become one of them.
You will have some the best times of your life in SU venues but make sure you keep safe. A few tips to make sure you stay safe and enjoy your night.
- Make sure you have a fully charged mobile
- Plan ahead and know how you are going to get home
- Keep safe walking home, buy a personal alarm from the Advice centre
- Condoms! If you find the perfect guy or girl it is always best to be safe not sorry.
- SU Venue staff are not just there to provide you with a great time, they are there to keep you safe. Don’t be afraid to ask them for help or report anything you think is dangerous or suspicious.
Best tip of all is to be aware of your surroundings, and if you feel in danger get help!
Sexual Health
University is a place where many students are free to what they want and express them selves for the first time, and for many students this means sex and lots of it! The SU doesn’t care what gets you going just that you’re safe!
- Condoms! Always have one handy. If you find the perfect guy or girl it is always best to safe not sorry. They are available for free from the Advice Centre.
- The most common sexually transmitted infection is Chlamydia. You can pick up and drop a test at the Advice centre at any time, and we’ll be bugging you in the loos to get tested.
- We hold regular sexual health tests on campus so keep an eye out. If you need a check up asap then head to the Colchester GUM Clinic in town.
- Don’t go home with that pretty guy or girl without letting one of your friends know where you’re going.
- You can purchase pregnancy tests from the Advice Centre for just £1! You can also chat to your doctor about contraception and your options.
Keeping your property safe
About 20% students become a victim of crime each year and it can be much higher in certain areas. Don’t make yourself an easy target.
- Keep your property out of view from windows.
- Mark all of your property with UV pens and make a list of all the expensive property you won.
- Get insured! Be prepared for the worst. Endsleigh are an insurance company formed out of the NUS and they tailor their policies to suit students.
- Top tip, lock your doors and windows! 60% of student targeted crime happen because doors and windows were left open.
