the SU Advice Centre
We'll be there for you...
Whilst your time at University can often be the best years of your life, there are bound to be times when you need someone to turn to for support, guidance or advice.
That's where the SU Advice Centre comes in.
The Advice Centre is here to help you with any issues that you might face whilst studying at Essex.
Our trained staff can offer advice on a whole rage of issues, including money, housing, immigration (including student visas), and disciplinary matters.
All of our advice is completely free of charge and is strictly confidential and impartial.
And because we are part of the Students Union, rather than the University, we can provide independent advice in all matters relating to the University.
So if you would like advice at any time during your time at University simply call by and see us at the Advice Centre, which can be found on Square 3, to the right of Lloyds TSB bank.
Alternatively you can email us any questions at suadvice@essex.ac.uk and we'll be glad to help or make an appointment for you to come in and speak to one of our trained advisors.
Staff
We are staffed by a team of fully trained student volunteers and paid student staff, with constant support from permanent members of staff.
The SUAC currently employs 2 permanent members of staff, 6 part time paid Senior Advisers and 14 volunteers.
Essex Law Clinic
The Essex Law Clinic is based in the SU Advice Centre. The Essex Law Clinic provides free initial legal advice to members of the public, students and University staff. The Law Clinic offers an initial consultation to clients in order to ascertain their legal position and advises on what steps the client can take to remedy the issues. More information about the Law Clinic and how to book an appointment can be found on the Law Clinic web pages.
What we do
The Advice Centre can offer information and support about a number of different situations.
Where possible most clients will be seen when they drop-in to the Advice Centre. However, in some cases if we are particularly busy or it appears to be a complicated case we may require you to book an appointment. We are only able to offer advice about Immigration in an appointment.
Please ensure you arrive on time for your appointment. If you are more than 15 minutes late we will not be able to see you. Appointments are made on a first come/first serve basis so if you miss your appointment you will have to wait until the next available time slot. We cannot guarantee that this will be on the same day.
Appointments generally last for 45 minutes unless otherwise specified, if by the end of your appointment further time is needed you will need to book a second appointment.
Please ensure you bring any relevant documentation, such as contracts/letters you have received/info about the situation etc, to the appointment. If your appointment is about your student visa renewal we will only be able to check your Tier4 application if you have completed the form as far as possible and you have your CAS from the university and your evidence of funding with you.
If you know you are unable to make it to your appointment please notify us as early as possible so that we can offer the appointment to other students.
