International Students
Welcome you’re probably looking forward to volunteering as a way to get to know the local community better, make new friends, earn new skills and have a different and rewarding experience. However you may have questions or concerns specific to your situation as an overseas student volunteering in another country such as: -
What does volunteering involve in the UK?Volunteering means different things in different countries. Here in the UK, volunteering generally involves doing unpaid activities that in some way benefit the local community.
Do I need a particular visa in order to be able to volunteer? All International students can volunteer in the community, regardless of what type of visa they have. Students whose visa state they cannot do paid work during their stay in the UK can volunteer as long as it remains just that and they do not at any point undertake paid work for their placement organisation.
I’m only here for a few months. Can I still volunteer?Yes, the amount of time organisations expect volunteers to commit for really varies. You can also get involved in some of the Vteams one –off projects. Details of these will be made available on the website or you can join the Vteams mailing list.
Will I need a Criminal Record Check? If your placement involves volunteering with children or vulnerable adults this will be required. The organisation you are volunteering with will provide the forms for you and give you advice on how to fill them in. If you are volunteering for the Vteam or a school we have the forms here in the Vteam office.
I’m not fluent in English. Could this affect my options when it comes to volunteering? Some volunteering opportunities will need fluent English however there are many where it is not essential. There are also opportunities where speaking another language is an advantage: for example supporting refugees and asylum seekers. If you are concerned discuss it further with the Community Volunteering Manager.
