The Ethics and Environment committee work to help improve the environmental record of the Union and lobby the University to improve its environmental record.

So far this year the committee have organised a mini-demonstration on campus in support of action to tackle Climate Change at the Copenhagen Summit and taken 70 students up to London to take part in ‘the Wave’ demonstration on December 5th for the same purpose.  They have also successfully run the ‘No Waste Graduation’ scheme to collect and sell on students waste stuff for charity.  They have also been able to continue to work with the University through the Green Task Force to improve the campus recycling facilities, water usage, Fairtrade, food, energy use, transport issues and more.
The Union have also successfully sent in their submission to the Sound Environmental Impact Award run by NUS Services Ltd .  Last year the Union gained a Silver in the Sound Impact Awards and we are hoping to equal or improve on our score this year.

The plan...

This term the committee plan to run a series of events to promote the Fairtrade and the University’s status during Fairtrade fortnight, have a ‘Green Week’ to raise awareness about the environmental issues facing us today and work to help put together a strategy for carbon reduction now the Union is signed up to the 10:10 scheme to reduce carbon emissions by 10% by the end of 2010.

If you have an questions or queries on how about what the Union or the University are doing to reduce their environmental impact or if you have any ideas or input then feel free to approach any of the committee or contact us on ethicsofficer@essex.ac.uk
