Fairtrade, food and ethics

How what you do makes a difference

Local food is produced closer to where you buy it so you are helping out local farmers and producers by buying it as well as cutting down on the food miles travelled so less carbon dioxide emissions are produced
Organic food is produced with less chemicals and pesticides so is better for the environment and for you
Fairtrade products are grown/produced to higher standards, the producers get a fairer price for their product and some of the profits go to fund development in the growers communities

You can help the environment and keep a clean conscience by looking out for local, organic and Fairtrade items whenever you shop.

On campus there is a variety of outlets and shops selling food. The Campus Shop is largely stocked by the Co-operative which has a good record on having high ethical and environmental standards.  Look out for their Fairtrade products including chocolate, biscuits and bananas and for free range meat and eggs.

The re-vamped campus shop also now has a much wider range of local products from many local brands and producers.

There is a regular fruit and vegetables market on a Friday on campus in Square 3.  All of the produce is fresh and local and reasonably priced.
