Each year in February, students put themselves forward to run for a full-time, paid position as a Student Leader. They campaign for votes and every Essex student will have an equal chance to 'vote like a student' and choose who they want to be elected into each of the 6 roles. This is the SU Leadership Election.

Hi, I'm Scarlet, a second year student and MTAS treasurer. I'm running for women's rep to ensure that women feel safe and heard as campus begins to return to normality.

Hi, I’m Scarlet, a second year Psychology student and treasurer for the Musical Theatre Appreciation Society.

I’m running for women’s rep because as we are coming out of lockdown and slowly re-entering campus women feel less safe than ever, and this should not be the case. I, myself, have been against the idea of joining certain societies because of how late they finish, and women should not have to change their plans because they feel unsafe. Furthermore, having spoken to women across campus, I have seen that a prominent theme is that women feel they are not taken seriously by the university, and I want to help change this fact. For example, many of the women told me that drinks being spiked are a huge problem they have faced, and most of the time stated that the university did not take them seriously when this was reported, which is horrifying. I have a number of distressing stories from women on campus, and this is why I want to make sure that women are listened to and treated fairly.

I have never really taken a role like this before, but after recent events both nationally and within Essex, I want to make sure women are heard and feel safe whilst on campus. I believe that I hold the qualities needed for a women’s rep, as I am a compassionate, empathetic, and honest woman. I also pride myself on being both a good listener and approachable person, which will hopefully allow women to feel more listened to and respected on campus. Although this will be my first rep role, I am determined to give it my all and make steps towards making the campus a safe place for everyone.

Why do I want this role? Well, after thanking and apologising to a woman who shared her negative on campus experience, I received the reply of “it’s the Essex uni”, and I found this appalling, as women should not be expected to just think that this is the norm. Instead, we should feel welcomed, safe, and respected on campus.

Thank you for reading,

Scarlet :)
