Each year in February, students put themselves forward to run for a full-time, paid position as a Student Leader. They campaign for votes and every Essex student will have an equal chance to 'vote like a student' and choose who they want to be elected into each of the 6 roles. This is the SU Leadership Election.

ETHAN NAISH

Passoniate about representing everyone and anyone. A friendly and approachable person who is willing to help. A voice for all mature students.

Who Am I?

I am a first year student studying Law LLB, and currently 23 years old. I have good relations with students of all ages and backgrounds, however I have noticed it is rather difficult to find other new mature students.  I am a very approachable and sociable person who appreciates what it is to be a mature student in a University environment. I am always willing to answer a question, if I don't know the answer i'll assist you to find it, or direct you to somebody that can!

In my current employment I act as an advocate for over 400 businesses in the town centre, representing their individual needs and views. I realise the practicalites and diffculties of representing such a vast array of views. Not every opinon will be popular as it may not be relevant to younger students or even seem counter intuative, nonetheless I am prepared to put those across.

My objectives

To act as a voice for every mature student. To represent mature students across the board, to raise the profile and awareness of all Mature Students to ensue the best possible conditions for us. To bridge the divide between Mature Students and Younger Students to promote cohesion and unity.  To ensure that both the University and Students’ Union are doing enough to support Mature students and integrate them into the student experience, whilst studying at The University of Essex. To ensure that if you have any issues or concerns or subversly any resoloutions or soloutions, that your opinon is heard, and the correct support can be given to you. Be it Inclusion, Finances, Study techniques, Welfare, Time management, or Employment, I can ensure that I will do my best to help.

How will I do this?

As I am currently a first year student it would be ridiclous for me to state that I know how to do this comprehensively. I will not lie to you and state that I am aware of every avenue in which this can be achieved, but i'm prepared to explore them all. I have already made good relations with staff members and student union representatives. I understand how councils operate and how to influence decision making the right way. I'm willing to work with others, and if necessary against the status quo. I will be a voice of reason and logic when it comes to particular issues that may to be unique mature students.

Mature Students make up a large proportion of the Univesity and being a mature student is not only acceptable but commendable. We are more likely to have a greater level of life experience as many of us have faced unique challenges which may have played a role as in why we have started later in life. I believe that as mature students we can bridge the gap between newer students, sharing our life experience to act as invaluable friends and mentors, as many others older than myself have in my own life.

Vote for me, and I will fufill the role to the best of my ability.

Thank you.
