Each year in February, students put themselves forward to run for a full-time, paid position as a Student Leader. They campaign for votes and every Essex student will have an equal chance to 'vote like a student' and choose who they want to be elected into each of the 6 roles. This is the SU Leadership Election.

I’m Kieron and I am in the final year of my Philosophy, Politics and Economics degree. Over the almost three years I’ve been at Essex and the three departments I have studied under, I have had the chance to see the major issues which affect students across the university, as well as the some of the more specific ones that impact individual departments.

My Focus

Priority 1: Teaching and Marking Standards

We have all seen the variation in teaching and marking standards during our degrees and as someone who has studied in multiple departments, there is also a clear difference between departments. This isn’t necessarily the fault of the lecturers themselves but rather shows how the University does not give them the working environment or the resources to give us the teaching we deserve.

Priority 2: Safety

One of the biggest issues I've heard crop up time and time again this year is the fact that students don't feel safe both on and around campus. This is impacting our ability to concentrate on our education and ultimately impacts every aspect of the student experience.

Priority 3: Reforming the SU

All of these longstanding problems show how ineffective the SU has been in representing student education concerns, along with other connected issues, both during and after the pandemic. It’s clear that they should be bolder and more proactive in standing up for our education.

Why should you vote for me?

Experienced

I have six years of campaigning experience, making a difference for young people on education and transport issues. I have also sat on SU Parliament, founded a society, been president of a society during all 3 years of my degree and supported multiple student campaigns. These have all allowed me to build the skills to make a real difference if you vote for me as your VP Education.

Dedicated To Making A Change

My time at Essex has been one of the best experiences of my life and I am committed to transforming our SU and our University for the benefit of the students, and to build upon where the SU has fallen short in the past.

Knowledgable

I have been a Student Community Officer and been in close contact with the SU over my time at Essex and, as such, I have a good understanding of the way that the SU works. Beyond that, I have spent a lot of time looking into the sometimes too confusing way the University is run and I have built up the knowledge to properly stand up for student interests.

Approachable

While I have a vision for how we can reform the SU and the University, I know that I'll never have a full picture of the problems students face on campus. I'm always open to hearing from you and changing the direction of how we work if that's what is needed. If elected, you can have a chat with me in SU Bar, over Zoom or in whatever way makes the SU accessible to you.
