Liv Smead, LIVing for the Student Experience!
I'm Liv Smead I'm a final year international relations student and I am running to be your VP Student Experience. I have been President of the Politics Society for two years and this year I have been working as your Student Services Officer. When I'm not working I'm usually in the gym or watching basketball.
Societies
Having been a president of a society I know the issues they have faced during and after covid, and I have seen how the SU could do more to support societies.
One of the issues I have seen is that societies simply just do not have enough money to run effective events and support their members. As VP Student experience I would focus on finding a better way to fund societies. However, the problems are not only monetary, the SU also struggles to support in building membership after Freshers fair.
Blades
Over my time at Essex, I have seen sports facilities taken over by the University. For example, the majority of squash courts were converted into teaching rooms. This has seriously hurt our squash team at Essex, and these kinds of problems are affecting more and more clubs. As VP Student Experience I would look into ensuring that sports clubs are given the facilities they need, including a greater number of sports fields to match the rising number of students and the ability to stand up to the University.
Rebel
Many universities have great student newspapers and radio stations, we have a proud history of this at Essex but it has been left to decline in recent years. If elected I would try to revitalise rebel radio and bring back the long-standing tradition of student journalism at Essex.
V-Team
I am very proud of the volunteering work at Essex and I would do my best to support students in their volunteering efforts and increase awareness of volunteering opportunities.
I know the problems. I know the solutions. Vote Liv Smead for VP Student Experience!
