Each year in February, students put themselves forward to run for a full-time, paid position as a Student Leader. They campaign for votes and every Essex student will have an equal chance to 'vote like a student' and choose who they want to be elected into each of the 6 roles. This is the SU Leadership Election.

HANNAH ILES

IN INTERSECTIONALITY THERE IS COMMUNITY, AND IN COMMUNITY THERE IS STRENGTH

Hey! My name is Hannah and I use they/them pronouns. I’m a first year Philosophy student with an unhealthy obsession with the classic SNES game Lemmings (yes I am a bit of a geek), and a lot of enthusiasm for helping others. I would put everything into being your LGBQ+ Officer next academic year.

I’m as frustrated as you are. There’s a deep need for increased feelings of safety and comfort on campus for queer students, especially in light of the current popular discourse surrounding the type of people we are, and our rights. Alongside a focus on this cluster of issues, I wish to strengthen the relations between the Network and the Society, as has been happening with the current Trans Officer; events organised by these two entities tend to attract differing demographics with differing needs, a gap which could be bridged by more correspondence between the two, and consistent event advertising. That’s another thing: we need more events, with a wider range of activities, so there’s something for everyone.

I would work closely with the new Trans Officer, whoever they may be, hopefully supporting each other’s events and providing the community with another successful, heartfelt and informative Trans Vigil of Remembrance and LGBTQ+ history month. I believe this is key in tackling misinformation, another focus I will adopt if elected. This will also include focusing on improving the inclusivity displayed by University staff.

In terms of Parliament, I want to make sure you’re accurately represented through frequent communication, making myself available for you to voice your concerns, and access support if you are going through difficult times. On the subject of representation, I wish focus on consulting with the POC members of our community to increase your representation, and hopefully increase the POC turnout at both Network and Society events. A focus on intersectionality is very much needed; there are unique struggles that come with being a member of multiple minorities, and I want to be able to provide any support I can, which includes collaborating with other Officers and focusing on what more we can do.

I really care about this community, and I wouldn’t be who I am without it; it’s provided me with endless opportunities to make friends with those who understand, without the fear of the experience-barrier we can sometimes run into when trying to connect with those on our courses, or in other areas of our day-to-day lives. I would love to be in the position to contribute to this support and sense of belonging. I am here for you.

In inclusivity there is community, and in community there is strength. If you would like more information or have any questions, please check out my Instagram @hannah4lgbq! I hope you will consider giving me your vote.
