Each year in February, students put themselves forward to run for a full-time, paid position as a Student Leader. They campaign for votes and every Essex student will have an equal chance to 'vote like a student' and choose who they want to be elected into each of the 6 roles. This is the SU Leadership Election.

Hi! My name is Sofia and I’m a second-year Curating student. You may have seen me wondering around on campus during events organized by the SU. I believe that I'll be a great megaphone for women, I'm hardworking and passionate about helping everyone.

As working in the Engagement team for the SU I have been able to interact with students from different communities. My experience in the SU has given me a great understanding on how it works. I want to do more so I decided to take a further step to help women. I candidate myself as women’s representative because I want to create a community based on equality where everyone can feel safe.

Safety for me is extremely important. I want people to feel safe when walking, at parties and if something happens I want them to feel secure in reporting. If elected, I would focus on safety on and out campus as well as the reporting system and policies because sexual harassment must not continue.

This year a lot of events have happened, since covid restrictions are finally gone, I would like to organise even more social and educational events to create a great sense of community.

We’ve dealt with 2 years of lockdown, where making new friends was basically impossible, some students may still feel that kind of isolation, is therefore important to bring awareness on mental health issues and reach those people.
