Each year in February, students put themselves forward to run for a full-time, paid position as a Student Leader. They campaign for votes and every Essex student will have an equal chance to 'vote like a student' and choose who they want to be elected into each of the 6 roles. This is the SU Leadership Election.

MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR 9K!

Hi! My name is Tari Seif. I am a final-year Politics and International Relations student. If you were wondering why I don’t look familiar to you, that’s because I’ve been abroad for the past year on two very eye-opening placements. I worked for 6 months in Egypt with UNDP, and am currently working in Washington DC for an NGO. Now that all the introductions are out of the way, let me talk to you about how those experiences have shaped my perspective on education and why I am passionate about this role.

The university and our SU offer many resources to support students along their academic journey. A lot of us – myself included – have resorted to these resources to help us navigate the academic world, especially during the pandemic. One big obstacle that I experienced, however, was figuring out what career paths are available to social science students as well as how to acquire the skills and knowledge needed to integrate into the workforce. My plan as the UG Education Representative for the Social Sciences is to work closely with the SU and with the various departments to promote career development resources that are already available and tailor them to better prepare students for the workforce. I am keen on exploring academic tutoring and career mentoring opportunities for students, especially in their 2nd and final years to allow them to develop key skills that they need to succeed as young professionals. The bottom line is that getting a degree is expensive and exhausting, so vote for me and we can work together to MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR 9K (and all those hours of sleep you sacrificed)!
