Lesbian, gay, bisexual and queer+ officer
This month I have been working with the rest of the LGBT+ Network exec to start planning Campus Pride. The event is scheduled to take place on Friday the 1st June and will be followed by Ignite on the 2nd. We're hoping to make this our best event ever – we have lots of great things planned and we'll be looking for student feedback to make sure the event is open and inclusive to everyone.
I've also been working with SU Advice and the University to update our archaic clothing policy for graduation. Currently, we're one of the last universities in the country to have a specifically gendered clothing policy for graduation which is something that definitely needs changing. So far, we've written a new policy to be decided upon by the graduation committee and we're waiting to hear back; with any luck, this policy will be implemented before this year's graduation ceremonies in July.
I've been working very closely with next year's LGBQ+ Officer, Vinnosh to make sure that he has the best start and can represent students effectively next year; you may know him as the co-chair of the LGBT+ Network currently and he does some fantastic work with the Network – Vinnosh and Jestin are currently working on LGBQ+ sports inclusivity with the sport department which is very exciting!
Next term we will be holding exec committee elections. Being involved in the Network is a great opportunity to spruce up your CV with voluntary work and we do some fantastic things to help represent LGBT+ students at the university. If you'd like to know more about the role of the Network or you're interested in running, don't hesitate to drop me and email at email@example.com.
As a final note, dental dams are now freely available in SU Reception following student feedback, which is an absolutely great win!
