Officer Report

VP International

The International Students Association (ISA) serves to engage with and support non-UK students (EU and International students) during their time at Essex. I am working closely with the ISA Chair to restructure and rebrand the ISA this coming 2017/2018 academic year to better benefit YOU, the students! Alongside the introduction of an Employability Officer for the ISA, we are also looking into rebranding the International Students Association Awards into the International Awards to further highlight the contributions of International members of academic and non-academic staff at the University of Essex.

I am currently compiling content to create an International Students Guide to Colchester, Southend and Loughton to further improve non-UK students’ #EssexExperience. The Guide will feature the International Students Association Committee, the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Network and cultural societies. The Guide will also include, among others, a list of international stores in Essex and recommended currency exchange services. Feel free to contact me with suggested content for the Guide!

University is a place to meet new friends – what better way to meet them than at a mixer? Following the success of our previous ISA mixers, I am looking to create the biggest International mixer the SU has hosted yet. Taking place in early October, I am planning to work closely with the ISA Committee to launch the revamped Buddy Scheme for new students. Essex has over 14,000 students from over 130 countries – that’s a lot of new friends to make!

The SU’s One Essex Inclusivity Project launched in March 2017 to eradicate discrimination against internationals of all backgrounds. Our second One Essex Hate Wall event took place in First Site Colchester in honour of John Ball Day, a day to celebrate social equality. We engaged with local families and attendees in order to share our message of inclusivity and to build greater community ties. Check out our project and join us at!

Going forward, I am looking into the possibility of quick trips to University of Essex Partner Universities in Europe. This will benefit part-time students, mature students or students with disabilities who do not have the time nor ability to commit to a semester or year abroad. I will be working closely with the University of Essex to create this opportunity for students.

Essex is truly International – for me, it’s home away from home. Looking forward to welcoming you in October and I hope you’ll feel the same!
