VP Southend

Goodbye Message:

It’s truly hard to believe 2years have quickly passed and I’m writing my final words to you all. From the start of this position I always put the needs of students at the heart of everything I did and without doubt it has been a pleasure to serve and represent all of you in this past 2 years.  I have truly enjoyed getting to know so many of you over the years as we worked together to improve the lives of all students in Southend.

Over the 2 years of representing you, I worked tirelessly with the staff members to ensure that our students were not left behind when decisions were being made within the University and students union. Together we achieved tremendous success and contributed positively in our campus. We were able to create several events and campaigns as compared to previous years, improved student engagement across departments, success in our Mental health and wellbeing project, created and secured funding for our First 2 Dragons Den sessions, First ever Google start-up trip, set up student parliament on our campus, created BAME Forums, Akala gave a talk in our campus, Black History month celebration, secured temporary alcohol license for student led events in our SU Lounge, Free amazon view in both the SU Lounge and common room in the University square, secured temporary accommodation option for our commuting students, affordable car parking rates. These are few to mention but I believe our efforts these past years have begun to lay a foundation upon which the student union will continue to be built in years to come.

My advice to you is to make sure to utilise the opportunities offered by both the University and the students union. Challenge yourself with new sports; take opportunities from the activities offered on campus to meet people from different backgrounds as well as people from other courses. As an international student, I took advantage of all these opportunities to meet a lot of new people and made good friends across the globe who will always be part of my life. So I will entreat you to make the most out there guys; and you will never regret it.

It has been a pleasure to be your Students’ Union Vice President and I will forever cherish it. It has given me fantastic memories and experiences I will always treasure. I wish you all the best in the future.

Report

Handover to the next Vice President (Andrea): Over the past month I have been working on a comprehensive hand over document for Andrea the newly elected Vice president for Southend. I believe this handover will provide her with the necessary foundation as she starts the role. The handover includes current projects, previous projects and ways to achieve them. I will also have one to one meeting with her to go over the plans to give her the opportunity to ask any questions before I leave the role. She will be taking over the role from the 1st of July and I can’t wait to see all the amazing things she will do for you all. I believe she’s got the passion, attitude and great ideas and will do a fabulous job.

Essex Start-up Boot camp:   I was called upon by the Essex start-ups team to be a Business mentor for this year’s start-up boot-camp. I assisted the students with ideas on how to figure out problems within their business ideas, how to solve the problems and how to pitch to potential investors. The mentors asked series of questions as well as providing feedbacks on individual businesses and ideas. Make sure to use the Essex start up website to book one to one meetings and they will help you with your business. This is an opportunity you will never going to get for free when you are out of the university so utilise them.

SU Advice Representative:  I had the opportunity to deal with student advice issues as well as attending academic offence meeting with students as an advice rep and support for them. I also advised students to seek guidance from the talent development centre and their fellow students if they need assistance in terms of issues concerning their course.

Nurse Mode: We provided our nursing students with snack bars, fruits and water to help them cope with their exams. This was made possible as a result of SU react so don’t forget to use it when you need to. As a member of the students union, you are entitled to the benefits it offers, so make sure to utilise it.

Southend Student Parliament:  As you guys massively supported the student parliament establishment during the referendum, we have started planning on how this can be executed down in the Southend campus. I have been able to offer my ideas to staff members on the project and I’m 100% sure you will come back to meet the newly functional student parliament. On the bright side you can be part of this initiative if you the kind of person who is interested in the affairs of representing your colleagues on a larger body. Don’t forget to look out for the available post on the SU website and our social media platforms to join the initiative.
