University of Essex Archery Club (UeAC)
Archery! A new and exciting club right here at The University of Essex.
This is truly a sport for all. A sport for you! Where everyone, of all abilities is welcome. It may be a focused, disciplined sport yet it only takes perseverance to produce easily visible, rapid results. Absolute beginners, within a few sessions, have excelled their expectations and keep coming back for more sessions. The eagerness of members has been overwhelming - over 100 people sign up for Archery at freshers fair every year!
On your first session you would be talked through the basics of archery, the parts of the bow and how to shoot safely. The first arrows you shoot will be shot ‘barebow’, without a sight, looking down the arrow to aim, to get a feel for the bow. In a couple of sessions a sight will be introduced to improve accuracy and consistency.
On a competitive front we have been to the BUCS indoor archery competition and have ranked highly in several individual events with Essex students winning gold in novice longbow, silver in novice recurve and gold in novice barebow. We have also seen success in the team events with our novice team coming in at second in the clubs first year. This amount of sucess is unbelievable for a club only a few years old- this year we hope to challange for medals again with last years members moving up to senior events and this years intake entering into the novice sections.
This year we shall be competing in local, national, and of course at BUCS competitions, both indoors and outdoors, and all members shall be encouraged but not pressured into competing. We may also be hosting a local league match at some point during the year - details to follow!During the year we will also organise a variety of socials so that we can go out as a club and enjoy a night out.
If you have any questions or comments please do not hesitate to contact me, Andrew Davison (amdavit@essex.ac.uk).
I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you at the sessions.
Please do not wear Jeans to Archery sessions - The sports centre will kick people out who are not in "sports clothing".
