Welcome:
Welcome to the very first students sports club at the new Southend campus - our
University
of
Essex
, Southend Fencing Society.
If you're into keeping fit, want to try something different from team sports or just kicking a ball around, or are just interested in learning the art of the sword, then Fencing might be the sport for you. Known for being one of the oldest duelling/martial sports, Fencing exercises not only the body but also the mind, in learning techniques to outwit your opponent. It is easy to learn but difficult to master, requiring speed, strength, stamina, determination, pin-point accuracy and strategy in order to emerge victorious.
Equipment.
All equipment is provided, just make sure you come in sports gear (track suit bottoms please, don't want to get hit in the legs!) and trainers with grip.
Cost.
Every member's first session is completely FREE! So anyone can have a taste of the sport before having to spend a single penny. Following this, every session will be £3. This is used to pay for the hall, buy and maintain equipment for the club, and then - if there’s then anything left - to pay for our coach to train us.
Venue.
For the moment, we’ll be meeting at St Saviours Church Hall,
Chadwick Road
, Westcliff, SS0 8LL. Map Here.
Meeting Time, Mondays
We will be meeting on Mondays at 7.30pm for an hour of tuition from Joanne, our coach. It is recommended that all newcomers to fencing come to this session first. The particularly keen amongst us can also stay for the following hour of fencing-orientated group training with the rest of the Seaxe club.
El Presidente
Our founder and glorious leader is Mark Scopes, mrscop@essex.ac.uk, at the East15 Acting School. Until recently Mark was our Eastern England Under 18s Épée champion. So we’re in good company!
Coaching.
We have a fully-accredited coach in both Foil and Épée from the British Fencing Association, Joanne Reynolds, a former GB seniors international fencer.
Southend Seaxe
University fencing society members are also automatically complimentary members of our host club, ‘Southend Seaxe’.
