Women in STEM

A society which promotes inclusivity for people in STEM, provides a platform and opportunities for underrepresented people within the community, and inspires people to work and study in STEM.

WHO ARE WE?

Hi there! If you’re on this page it must mean you’re passionate about STEM… we are too! Our society was created to promote inclusivity and provide a platform for a supportive environment for underrepresented people in STEM, as well as to provide opportunities, inspire and educate all individuals to work or study in STEM fields.

Our society focuses on reaching out to women and non-binary people, however all of our events and socials are open to anybody who is passionate about celebrating STEM!

OUR AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

Our main aim is to promote inclusivity in STEM, whilst providing a supportive environment. We wish to provide opportunities to learn more about STEM, to teach others about STEM and to inspire others to work or study STEM subjects. A key focus of ours is targeting diversity and inclusion within the STEM industry and helping members wherever we can - whether that be career-wise or with University!

WHAT WILL YOUR MEMBERSHIP GET YOU?

1. A supportive and welcoming group of like-minded individuals!

As well as career and study events, we hold a lot of welfare and wellbeing events. WiSTEM was created with the intention of having a safe space where individuals can have their voices heard – our messages are always open. We have a WhatsApp and Facebook group that are active throughout the year.

2. Keep up-to-date with current events and opportunities within the STEM industry!

Your membership gives you access to an exclusive monthly newsletter that gives you information on opportunities, talks, webinars and workshops. You can also find these on our Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn pages!

3. Make a difference in the community!

We host volunteering and fundraising events for meaningful charities that aim to support underrepresented individuals in STEM and education, for example. Last year, we won the Raising and Giving award for raising £975 – we hope we can raise even more this year!

4. Gain confidence in networking and meeting other successful women in STEM!

We host networking events, ‘How-To’ sessions and panel discussions so you can learn how to network and put your new skills into practice.

5. Friends and fun!

We’re not just about the educational stuff – we host lots of socials, quizzes, movie nights, games nights and even study sessions throughout the year. Look out for our social events on our social media and the Essex SU What’s On page.
