Referendum Case

"Should 3 SU food and drink outlets (The SU Bar, The Kitchen and The Greenhouse) transition to 100% plant-based catering by 2026 to support the University in achieving its goal of net-zero emissions?"

Motion 1 - The 'Yes' case

We are campaigning for 3 of the SU outlets on the Colchester campus (SU Bar, The Kitchen, The Greenhouse Café) to transition to 100% plant-based catering by 2026. The research is clear that in order to prevent climate and ecological breakdown we need to take urgent and decisive action in making changes to the way we eat (We must change what we eat to solve the… | Oxford Martin School). Animal agriculture is arguably the most destructive industry on the planet at present. (Knowledge Repository ::Home (fao.org))The animal agriculture sector contributes a fifth of greenhouse gas emissions (whats_cooking_frontiers_ESEN.pdf (unep.org)), is the primary driver of deforestation (Cutting down forests: what are the drivers of deforestation? - Our World in Data), and is the primary driver for the destruction of the world’s most biodiverse ecosystems on land and at sea(Our global food system is the primary driver of biodiversity loss (unep.org)). And these are just some of the ways that the industry is destroying our planet and our future. Vote YES and make Essex one of the growing number of universities making the switch to plant-based catering and help achieve a sustainable future for us all.
