Nominations

This is where it all begins and it is important to get it right from the first stage. As you can see in the elections
timetable, nominations open and close on specific dates – you can only collect your form when nominations
open and they must be returned by 4p.m. on the day of close of nominations. Nomination forms can be collected from the Students’ Union reception. If you wish to stand for election you’ll need to find a proposer and seconder. After nominating you, your proposer and seconder are under no obligation to play any future role in your campaign. They must both, however, be registered students and no student can propose or second two people in the same election. A Candidate may choose to nominate up to two agents who can play a role in your election campaign.

There are also some other rules relating to these elections.  If you are standing in the General Election for the post of Faculty Convenor, your proposer and seconder must also study in the same school of study. Therefore if you are a Psychology student and decide to stand for the position of Science and Engineering Convenor, your proposer and seconder must study in either the departments of Biological Sciences, Computer Science,
Electronic Systems Engineering, Psychology or Mathematical Sciences. If you have any queries about what school you study in please enquire at SU Reception.  Similarly, if you are standing for post of Women’s Convenor, your proposer and seconder need to be female. There is a full guide to which departments are in which schools on the nominations form.

Candidates can also run as part of a slate. A slate is where a group of students decide to run together under one name or slogan with each student standing for different positions. Slates are allocated a combined publicity budget but each member of the slate still needs to fill in their own nomination form with the fellow members of the slate clearly stated on the form.

Once you have completed your nomination form it should be handed into reception along with your deposit and it will then be recorded on the list of nominations.
Before you have access to your budget, you will need to pay a deposit of _10 if you are running for a position on the executive and a deposit of _5 for all other positions. If you are running for multiple positions you must pay a deposit for each position. Deposits can be in the form of cash which should be taken to the Finance Office who will issue you with a receipt which can be presented at SU Reception or, alternatively, a cheque which should be made payable to Students’ Union and dated four days after the day of the poll. All deposits will be returned unless sanctions are imposed by the Elections Committee. Even if you are running as part of a slate, each member of the slate still has to pay their deposit.

After the nominations have closed, a declaration of candidates notice will appear in the Union the following day.

Candidates Meeting

This is a really important part of the election process as it offers you the opportunity to clear up any questions you may have about the procedures in place for Students’
Union Elections. Members of both the Elections Committee and the Election Staff will be on hand to answer questions you may have. We will also confirm at this meeting what the budget is for each candidate. If you are running as part of a slate you will receive a budget for the entire slate.
