Each year in February, students put themselves forward to run for a full-time, paid position as a Student Leader. They campaign for votes and every Essex student will have an equal chance to 'vote like a student' and choose who they want to be elected into each of the 6 roles. This is the SU Leadership Election.

Making Welfare a priority for every student all day, every day :) #WinwithVinny

Hello everyone! My name is Vinnosh Kumar. You may also know me by the name of Vinny. I am currently a 3rd year law student. I was also a course rep in 1st year and the LGBQ+ Officer from 2018 to 2019. More recently, you may have seen me at the Kitchen where I work as a Retail Supervisor.

My inspiration to run for this position not only stems from my own mental health experience but witnessing those of my friends as well. Although advocacy for mental health is better than before, only those who have experienced it know how difficult it is to be battling with your own mind every single day. Almost 34% of students have experienced a serious mental health issue that needed professional help. It is vital that we act as soon as possible to ensure that students have access to support that is essential in saving their lives.

I want to bring back the paramount importance of putting students first. The Adult Mental Aware Half Day course has equipped me with a better understanding and unique approach in assisting students. Working as a case worker at the Law Clinic for almost 4 years has allowed me to handle some of the most difficult and overwhelming issues that we, as students, are currently or will have to experience. I want to equip students with skills that will prepare them for life.

Bringing back the conversations of mental health, tackling loneliness, and sexual health on the table are greatly important. I also want to revisit the relationship that the students and the University have in terms of actively applying the Student Conduct code. Most importantly, I always want to keep my door open for you. To listen and understand who you are, where you are at, and what matters to you.

If you have any questions at all are have anything you would like to share, I will be on the squares during Campaign week. Don't hesitate to come up and have a chat :)
