Learning & Development

Growing Your Skills at Essex SU

Once you’ve completed your New Staff Bootcamp induction, you’ll have the chance to chat with your line manager about any further development needs. Together, you can decide what’s next for your growth.

Our People & Development (PED) team are also here to help- whether that’s finding training or creating something new. Wherever possible, we love to make use of the brilliant skills and expertise we already have in-house.

From time to time, you’ll be invited to attend training sessions- some will be compulsory to support business needs, and others optional to help you build new knowledge and skills.

Free Learning Opportunities

There are loads of free courses out there to help you learn something new or sharpen your skills:

  • ACAS - Free training on workplace rights, policies, and people management from the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service.
  • Alison - Free courses from leading experts. From short modules to full certificates in subjects like languages, media, health, business, and more.
  • OpenLearn - Free learning from The Open University. Choose from bite-sized videos or in-depth courses.
  • LinkedIn Learning - One month’s free trial with expert-led courses for every stage of your career.
  • TED-Ed - Short, inspiring video lessons organised by subject.

Some courses even give you a certificate you can proudly display (and don’t forget to send a copy to PED for your personnel file, and log it in your Learning Account).

More Training at Essex

Don’t forget – SU staff can also access any of the training sessions run by the University. Just email develop@essex.ac.uk to get involved, or browse all opportunities here.

And here’s something exciting: after two years of service, SU staff have the opportunity to study a Master’s degree at Essex for free. You can find full details in the Learning & Development Policy

If you’d like to explore the idea of studying an apprenticeship alongside your role, have a chat with PED to see what might be possible.
