TRUSTEES
The University of Essex Student Union's trustees are legally responsible for the charity, its assets and activities. They are a group of people we put our trust in to make sure that our SU is in safe hands.
Our Trustee Board is made up of sixteen people. Seven of these are the elected Student Exec officers, who also have responsibilities as a trustee, as well as representing the student body. The other trustees are made up of 6 students and 3 non students. These trustees are appointed because of their experience, skills and commitment to Essex University.
What responsibility do the board have?
- Ensure that Essex SU has a clear vision, mission and strategic direction and is focused on achieving these
- Ensure Essex SU complies with all legal and industry regulatory requirements
- Be responsible for Essex SU's budget; making sure that we have enough money to help you love your time at Essex now and in the future
- Ensure that Essex SU's governance is of the highest possible standard
The Board of Trustees doesn’t get involved in the representation side of things at Essex SU. Representation of students is the responsibility of the your student Exec who ensure that the voice of the student body students is heard throughout the University and Union. Details of these can be found here.
The Trustee Board is made up of:
- 6 Student Leaders
- 6 Student Trustees
- 4 External Tustees
- 5 SU Directors
STUDENT TRUSTEES
SUSANNAH EIDEN
I am a Global Sustainability BSc student who is currently on a placement year at an agrosicences company. I like to keep busy by volunteering, both for the Student's Union, and externally especially with the local Rainbow and Brownie units, and with Essex Wildlife Trust.
I relax by listening to music, going for walks round Wivenhoe (sometimes with my litter picker!), and reading. I've also gotten involved again in theatre since coming to uni and have been part of the backstage crew for lots of TAS shows!
YURY KARUTIN
I am a Final Year BA International Relations student and a Welfare Supervisor at Sub Zero. I’m a pretty active person, I play Baseball at the University and am slowly getting into Judo, aside from trying to keep a consistent exercise routine. I’ve spent the past three years at Essex being a journalist for Rebel Media, where I’ve now made it to the position of Head of Editorial.
Aside from that, I’ve been the President of two societies at my time in Essex, one for politics and one for performing arts. I enjoy talking about various topics and watching movies. I’m able to speak Russian and English, and am trying to learn Portuguese (or trying to get a 365 day streak on Duolingo if you want to be cynical about it). I’ll see you around!
BENJAMIN BRAGG
I am a final year BA Economics student and I’ve been working in the Finance department of the Student’s Union across my three years at the uni. I am a volunteer treasurer for a local charity back home and I am planning on studying for my CIMA qualifications once I have graduated.
I am always listening to music and will fiercely argue why the Beatles are the greatest band of all time. I also love football and I’ve had an Everton season ticket for the last 12 years, so I can deal well with disappointment.
LUCA GUGOLZ
I am a final-year Management and Marketing student. I am currently the president of the Sustainable Students Society, which reflects my strong interest in sustainable practices.
In my free time, I enjoy going to the gym and am also a member of the Jiu-Jitsu and Judo sports clubs. I was born and raised in Switzerland, which means I am fluent in German (and I like to think so in French, though that might not entirely be true!).
My main passion is traveling and learning about different cultures. Having travelled to India last summer, I hope to visit many more places around the world, even though this may sometimes conflict with my commitment to sustainable practices. Looking forward to seeing you around!
SIMRAN KSHIRSAGAR
Hi. I am Simran! I am in my second year studying Accounting and Finance.
A little bit about me is that I enjoy reading, traveling, and learning to ice skate.
I'm also incredibly excited to serve as a Student Trustee and contribute to positively impacting our student community!
ABDULAZIZ SHAIKH
I am a law student at the University of Essex with a strong passion for advocacy and student representation. I have experience in legal research, marketing, and sales, which have helped me develop strong communication and problem-solving skills.
I am a keen footballer and enjoy staying active. I am also a member of the travel society as I love to travel and explore different cultures and traditions.
Having lived and studied in different environments, I value diverse perspectives and believe in creating an inclusive and supportive community for students. Looking forward to contributing and making a difference!
EXTERNAL TRUSTEES
CHARLOTTE TURNBULL
I am a solicitor specialising in employment law in London, and I’ve recently completed my Executive MBA at Essex Business School, where I was also a student representative. As a dual British-Australian national, I’ve got a passion for travel and adventure, and when I’m not exploring new places, I enjoy hiking, reading, and discovering new cuisines.
In addition to being a trustee of Essex SU, I am also a trustee of a mental health charity which is something I’m truly passionate about, as I believe in the importance of supporting mental well-being in the workplace. I have a wonderful six-year-old daughter who keeps me on my toes, along with two curious cats!
CHANTEL LE CARPENTIER
I graduated from Essex in 2017. I was also a sabbatical officer from 2013 to 2015. I work in political and education policy research and currently lead on evaluation of adult education programmes for the Greater London Authority, I have previously held positions in higher education policy and political polling.
I loved my time at Essex, and I love that I am able to give back by being on the trustee board. Essex SU definitely changed my life, as it has the lives of many other former students and staff, I'm glad to part of its future.
Outside of work, I love hiking, arts and crafts and board games. Fun (?) fact about me is that I'm one of the many people from Southampton who have French heritage (hence my name). Lots of people in my school had French names and I thought that was normal (like lots of French people live in the UK no?) until I went to uni and realised that wasn't true and looked into the history of migration from France to Southampton. My superpower is still being bad at French, when I've been learning it almost my whole life (je suis désolée). Not fun, but kinda interesting(?).
SARAH ADENAIKE
I am deeply passionate about education and financial literacy, with a strong commitment to sharing knowledge and giving back to the community. After earning my law degree from the University of Essex, I authored the bestselling book “Things University Doesn’t Teach You,” aimed at empowering others with essential life skills. Currently, I hold the position of Head of Financial Crime and Information Security Governance. I’ve also had the privilege of working with prestigious clients such as JP Morgan, Bank of America, Deloitte, and Coinbase across the UK, EU, and Asia.
My dedication to excellence has been recognised by the International Compliance Association for my outstanding performance. Additionally, I proudly hold a First Class Master's in Financial Regulation and Compliance. As an international speaker and trainer, my mission is to make a meaningful impact on students' lives, one individual at a time. I am thrilled to bring my experience and passion to the Essex Student Union as an External Trustee. I love learning and travelling in my spare time.
ALEX DAVISON
I am an IT and education specialist with a strong background in digital transformation, strategy, and governance. I also hold an MBA from the University of Essex, which has strengthened my strategic and leadership expertise.
Beyond my professional role, I have a keen interest in governance and social impact, serving as a trustee for an education trust and previously as a school governor. In my spare time, I enjoy climbing, stage management, and making the most of a good night out.
