Student Advisor

Your Student Advisor - Here for you

Your Student Advisor is your main point of contact if you’ve got questions about your course, need some support, or just want to chat about how things are going. They’re there to help you feel part of your department (they will always be from your home department) and make sure you’re getting the most out of uni life.

They can also point you towards other support services on campus if you ever need a bit of extra help!

👏 WHAT THEY CAN HELP WITH

Your Student Advisor can:

  • Answer your course-related questions or put you in touch with the right person
  • Help you deal with anything that’s affecting your studies
  • Talk through your feedback and academic progress
  • Offer advice on picking your modules
  • Help you make the most of uni opportunities
  • Chat about life after graduation and career ideas
  • Write you a reference for jobs or further study

🚫 WHAT THEY CAN'T HELP WITH

They’re not the best person for:

  • Specialist advice about disability, money, housing, or visas
  • Counselling or health-related support

But don’t worry - they’ll point you in the right direction if you need those services.

📝 MEETING NOTES ON LEAP

When you meet with your Student Advisor, they might make a few notes on the Learner Activity Engagement Portal (LEAP).

You can log in via the LEAP webpage or MyEssex to see those notes, reflect on your progress, and track your engagement across the year.

🔁 CHANGING YOUR STUDENT ADVISOR

If you ever want to change your Student Advisor, have a chat with your Senior Tutor.

If your Advisor is your Senior Tutor, the Professional Services team in your department can help instead.

🎓 GETTING A REFERENCE

One of the great things about staying in touch with your Student Advisor is that they’ll really get to know you; which means they can write you a solid reference when you need one for jobs or further study.
