Please note that this event will take place in LTB 8 (Lecture Theatre Building, Room 8) at 5pm!!!.
For our 10th and final event this term, we will be hosting a panel event with the Palestine Solidarity Society.
The talk will be chaired by Lorna Finlayson and will feature Barnaby Raine (Brooklyn Institute for Social Research). We will discuss the crisis of free speech on campus regarding Palestine, particularly focusing on our university's alarming decision to report six students to the police for sharing articles on social media about the ongoing genocide in Gaza. This worrying trend, the suppression of Palestinian solidarity, reveals how colonial dynamics abroad impact our rights and freedoms here. This phenomenon is not unique to Essex; thus, our discussion will also examine the international patterns of silencing Palestinian activism at universities more generally.
Also featuring:
Lorcan Whitehead (Essex UCU Co-President), on the timeline of crackdowns and how it has shaped the movement.
Professor Tara Van Ho (Essex Law School,) on the international legal consensus and the arbitrary treatment of the Essex 6.
