Mind the Talk: Transforming Thoughts into Talks That Inspire
What is Mind the Talk?
Mind the Talk is an intensive 6-week public speaking development program designed to empower University of Essex students to craft and deliver compelling TEDx-style talks. This transformative workshop series guides participants from initial ideation through to a polished 18-minute talk delivered at a professionally produced Mock TEDx event.
Program Structure
Week 1: The Power of Ideas - Finding Your "Idea Worth Spreading"
Date: Friday, 7th November 2024 | 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM | CTC 10.01
Participants will be introduced to the TEDx philosophy and format, learning what constitutes an "idea worth spreading." Through analysis of iconic TED talks and guided brainstorming exercises, students will explore their personal stories, expertise, and passions to identify potential talk topics. The session includes small group discussions and ideation frameworks designed to uncover meaningful ideas that resonate.
Week 2: Story Structure & The Art of the Narrative Arc

This session focuses on the fundamentals of storytelling and TEDx talk structure. Participants will learn how to construct compelling narrative arcs, create powerful opening hooks, and build emotional connections with audiences. Each participant will pitch their top idea in a 2-minute format to receive peer feedback and expert guidance.
Week 3: Writing Your Talk - Crafting Compelling Content
Date: Tuesday 18th Nov | 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM | TBC
A comprehensive writing workshop where participants will develop their first complete draft. Training will cover techniques for clarity, emotional impact, and persuasive communication, including the integration of data, personal stories, and effective calls-to-action. Participants will engage in peer editing sessions and learn the "one sentence test" to distill their core message.
Week 4: Delivery Skills - Voice, Body, Presence
Date: Tuesday, 25th Nov | 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM | TBC
This session develops essential performance skills including vocal variety, pacing, strategic pausing, body language, and stage presence. Participants will engage in voice projection exercises, body language workshops, and deliver 3-minute excerpts from their talks. Video recording and self-review sessions provide valuable feedback, while improv exercises build confidence.

Topics covered include overcoming stage fright, commanding presence without slides, using pauses for impact, and distinguishing authentic from performed delivery.
Week 5: Refinement & Rehearsal
Date: Tuesday, 2nd Dec | 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM | TBC
The penultimate session features full run-throughs with structured feedback from peers and expert coaches. Each participant will deliver their complete talk (or 10-minute version) and receive comprehensive feedback on both content and delivery. Technical preparation includes guidance on visual aids, stage blocking, and microphone technique.
Guest Speaker: Expert coach will observe all run-throughs, provide individualized feedback, conduct one-on-one coaching moments, and deliver final preparation advice for the Mock TEDx event.
Week 6: Mock TEDx Event - Live Presentations
Event Details : TBC
The culmination of the program features a professionally staged Mock TEDx event complete with red carpet setup, TEDx branding, and professional filming. Each participant will deliver their polished 12-18 minute talk before an audience including all guest speakers from previous weeks, university leadership, invited guests, faculty, and fellow students. A professional MC will host the event, followed by a panel Q&A with guest speakers.

Eligibility: Open to all TEDx Society Members
- Week 1 (7th November) is FREE for all University of Essex students as a taster session
- Full 6-week program is FREE for members of TEDx Society
Prerequisites: No prior public speaking experience required. Participants need only bring passion, commitment, and an idea they believe is worth sharing.
