Student Experience Project

Powered by students: it’s one of our tattoos.

This bumper research project centred student voices to get the scoop on what the Essex student experience is like. It involved an in-depth exploration of every aspect of student life.

When asked what makes Essex unique, many cited the community, diversity, and willingness to do things differently. And the report doesn’t shy away from the challenges faced by students and the university, either - there’s no bullshit, just plenty of super useful insights.

What makes the University of Essex and its Students' Union spesh? We’re a widening participation, globally recognised university with one of the most diverse student bodies around and a strong sense of community and belonging. In other words, you make it spesh! (are you blushing yet?)

Student feedback in 24/25 shows that about 9 in 10 respondents were ‘satisfied’ or ‘very satisfied’ with their time at university. It’s an amazing stat, but no student’s experience is perfect, and the report identifies issues. Some of the matters raised include OTT bureaucracy (overcomplicated policies and procedures), inconsistencies in academic services, and workload scheduling.

Student input was key to creating this valuable resource that’ll help create change - we litro couldn’t have done it without you. Keep making your voice heard. 💛
