University life can be a rollercoaster of emotions – the highs, lows and everything in between. As a member of Essex SU you’ll never have to manage alone. Whilst we aren't a wellbing service, we are here to offer support and practical information. We also work closely with the VP Welfare and Student Leadership team to run campaigns and represent the student voice on issues that impact the welfare of students at Essex.
There are 3 ways to get support from SU Advice:
You’re here to get a degree – we’re here to help you get the most out of it. From study skills to career tips, we’ve got your back with academic support and future-you planning.
From revision tips to career workshops, we’ve got support for now and whatever comes next.
We’ve got your back.
The Postdoctoral Hub plays a key role in coordinating the priorities, support services, and training needs of postdoctoral staff.
While professional development and training for both postdoctoral researchers and their managers are primarily delivered by departments and professional service areas—including Organisational Development (OD) and the Research and Enterprise Office (REO)—the EDPC provides a cohesive structure to ensure consistency and representation across the university.
The Postgraduate Research Education Team supports many aspects of the University's postgraduate research education provision, including Doctoral Training Partnerships and postgraduate research student skills development.
We have oversight of procedures and central administration for Postgraduate Research (PGR) student casework, re-registration, progression and examination processes, and we advise to departments on these areas. We work on strategic and policy developments to support and enhance postgraduate research education. We also run cohort building projects and events for PGR students, and PGR student skills development via Proficio.
Postgraduate Research milestones are used to ensure you're making sufficient progress during your studies. They also keep you on track to submit within the appropriate period. They should also help to provide a supportive framework to guide students through the various stages of their research.
PGR supervisors will talk through the relevant milestones during supervisory meetings. You should refer to them on a regular basis.
PGR supervisors should talk through the relevant milestones during supervisory meetings and they should be referred to on a regular basis.
Supervisory panels and Research Students’ Progress Boards use the milestones to guide judgements on progress and to shape a recommendation. It is recognised that every research journey is different and that, whilst the milestones provide an overarching framework of expectations, a degree of flexibility is also required based on the scope of research.
Students and supervisors are encouraged to supplement these milestones with individual research plans which take into account the specifics of an individual research project and the individual circumstances of the PGR student.
To request an accessible copy of the milestone pdfs, please email pgresearch@essex.ac.uk

Proficio is our innovative professional development scheme for postgraduate research students, unique to Essex. We believe that your academic and professional development is vital to your growth as a postgraduate research student and we give you funds that can be spent on a variety of courses and conferences.
Your research supervisor will be one of your most important points of contact at the University. They will guide you through the research process and provide specialist knowledge and advice throughout your studies. This may include supporting you with ethical approval, identifying training needs, developing your research methods and structure, and reading and providing feedback on your work.
Your supervisor should maintain regular contact with you and meet with you at least once a month.
If you experience any difficulties with your supervisor or your supervisory relationship, you can contact the PGRE Team for support and guidance.
