Tragic Toys for Adults: Sigmund Freud's "Creative Writers and Day-Dreaming"
Psychoanalysis's relationship to literature has been enduring. In one of his earliest formulations, "Creative Writers and Day-Dreaming", Freud examines both the source of inspiration in the writer, and the source of pleasure in the reader, in their relation to the unconscious wish fulfilment which we strive to disavowal. But does Freud still speak to us as readers today?
After a brief introduction to the text, this seminar aims to investigate this question.
