YOUR WELLBEING. YOUR CAMPUS. YOUR SAY.
Care about student wellbeing? Got ideas for making life at Essex better? We want to hear them.Tell us what students are experiencing. Get involved in welfare campaigns & events. Create welfare related content.
We’re looking for students to become our new SU Welfare Reps.
You’ll work alongside the VP Welfare to find out what’s really affecting students, help shape welfare campaigns and activities, and make sure student voices are part of the conversation.
You don’t need to be a welfare expert. We’re looking for students who care about the experience of others, are happy to share ideas and want to make a difference.
This is a voluntary role for one academic year.

WHAT WILL I ACTUALLY DO?
Being a Welfare Rep isn’t about giving other students welfare advice – we have trained teams for that.
Instead, you’ll help us understand what students are experiencing and make our welfare work better. You’ll:
- Be a student voice – join termly Welfare Rep Forums and tell us about the issues, experiences and trends affecting students.
- Get involved in campaigns – help with welfare campaigns, awareness stalls and activities across campus.
- Talk to students – attend events with the VP Welfare and Student Community Officers, chatting to students and gathering feedback.
- Create content – contribute blogs, articles, Reels and other content for the SU Welfare Hub.
- Help students get involved – work with us to develop ideas like a buddy system for students who might feel nervous or anxious about attending SU events.
- Bring your own ideas – if there’s something you think could improve student welfare, you'll have opportunities to develop projects of your own.
WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME?
As well as helping make student life better, you'll build skills and experience you can take beyond Essex.
You’ll get Mental Health First Aid and welfare training, experience creating digital and social content, and opportunities to shadow and gain work experience with SU Advice.
You'll also be able to log your volunteering hours towards relevant University recognition, build experience for your CV and LinkedIn, and have the opportunity to gain recommendations based on your contribution to the role.
WHAT'S THE COMMITMENT?
We know you've already got a degree and everything else that comes with student life, so we're keeping the commitment manageable.
The role lasts for one academic year. As a minimum, we’ll ask you to:
- Attend the termly Student Welfare Forum
- Write or contribute to at least one blog/article per term
- Support at least one welfare campaign per term
There will be other opportunities to get involved throughout the year, depending on your interests and availability.
SOUND LIKE YOU?
Register your interest by Sunday 18 October 2026.
Tell us a little about yourself and why you'd like to become a Welfare Rep. We'll then invite shortlisted students for a chat about the role.
