What You Need to Know About Your Student Visa
If you require a Student Visa to study at Essex, you need to be aware your Student visa comes with responsibilities – known as conditions. It's important to understand what is expected of you and to make sure you don't breach these conditions.
Keep Your Immigration Documents Safe
Your visa is proof that you have permission to study in the UK. Keep your passport and visa details somewhere secure and make copies of important documents – you do not need to carry the original documents with you all the time.
Most visas are now eVisas, so you can access your immigration status online.
Make Sure Your Details Are Up to Date
If your personal details change, such as if you move address, get a new passport, or change your name, make sure you inform the relevant authorities and update your information when required.
For more information on who, when and how to update your details, see the University's guidance on changes to your personal information.
Attend Your Classes and Tap In
Your Student visa is linked to your studies. Attending lectures, seminars and other required activities is an important part of maintaining your visa responsibilities.
The University is required to monitor student engagement and attendance.
You need to tap in with your registration card (on time) for every lecture and class to ensure your attendance is recorded. If you are unwell you need to report this and request authorised absence.
Working During Your Studies
Most Student visa holders will have restrictions on how many hours they can work and the type of work that is permitted.
If you do plan to find part-time work whilst you're in the UK, you must make sure you do not breach these working conditions.
Check out UKCISA (UK Council for International Student Affairs) for more helpful information about working while studying.
