Navigating University Life as a Mature Student

Starting university as a mature student can feel exciting, empowering, and maybe a little nerve-wracking too. Whether you're returning to education after a few years, changing career direction, or fulfilling a lifelong ambition, it's important to remember one thing: you're not alone.

At the University of Essex, more than a quarter of students are mature learners, bringing a wealth of life experience, professional knowledge and different perspectives to campus.

What is a mature student?

In higher education, a mature undergraduate student is generally someone aged 21 or over who has had a break from full-time education before starting university.

Mature students come from all kinds of backgrounds. Some are balancing study alongside employment, caring responsibilities, or family life, while others are starting a completely new chapter after years in a different career.

The experiences you bring with you are a real strength. Life skills such as organisation, resilience, communication and problem-solving can be incredibly valuable during your studies.

Top tips for settling in

1. Give yourself time to adjust

Returning to study can take a little getting used to. Academic writing, referencing and independent learning may feel different from what you remember, but that's completely normal.

Be patient with yourself and remember that learning is a process, not a race.

2. Make connections early

One of the biggest worries mature students often have is fitting in. The reality is that university communities are incredibly diverse.

Take opportunities to:

  • Attend welcome events
  • Join student groups and societies
  • Participate in class discussions
  • Connect with other mature students

You may be surprised how many students share similar experiences.

3. Don't be afraid to ask for help

Successful students aren't the ones who never struggle. They're the ones who know when to seek support.

Whether you're unsure about an assignment, managing your wellbeing, or balancing university with family commitments, support is available.

4. Create a routine

Many mature students juggle multiple responsibilities. Setting aside dedicated study time each week can help keep things manageable and reduce stress during busy periods.

5. Celebrate your wins

Every completed reading, assignment submission or successful presentation is an achievement.

Recognise your progress and be proud of how far you've come.

Financial support for mature students

Money worries can be a significant concern when returning to education, particularly if you're supporting a family or managing household expenses.

The good news is that many mature students are eligible for the same government-backed student finance as younger students.

Depending on your circumstances, you may also be entitled to additional support, including help if you have children or other dependants.

The University may also have scholarships or bursaries that you could be eligible for.

Top tip: If you're worried about money, look into the support available to you early rather than waiting until things become difficult.

Support available at the University of Essex

The University of Essex recognises that mature students may have different needs and experiences, and there is a range of support available to help you thrive.

Mature Students Community

All Essex students automatically become members of Essex Students' Union, where you can connect with the Mature Students Community.

This community hosts activities and social events throughout the year, helping mature students build friendships and find peer support.

Student wellbeing and support

The University Student Wellbeing and Inclusivity Service (SWIS) offers dedicated student support services covering wellbeing, practical advice and guidance throughout your studies.

Whether you're facing personal challenges or simply need someone to talk to, support is available.

Flexible commuting options

Many mature students commute to campus. At the Colchester Campus, students can access discounted parking permits, alongside good bus and rail links, helping make travelling to and from university more convenient.

Remember: You belong here

Sometimes mature students worry they'll stand out. In reality, higher education is increasingly recognised as something people can engage with at any stage of life.

Universities benefit enormously from the different experiences, perspectives and skills that mature learners bring to their communities.

Whether you're pursuing a long-held dream, developing your career, or discovering a new passion, your journey is uniquely yours.

So as you begin your time at Essex, remember: you don't need to have all the answers.

Take things one step at a time, make use of the support around you, and trust that you have earned your place here.

Welcome to Essex. We're glad you're here.
