Getting Started

Pick up your Student Card and make sure you are fully enrolled.

This is the best way to find out more about your course, meet the staff teams and hopefully meet some new friends to study with!

Feeling lost? A bit overwhelmed? Wondering where to get the best coffee? Don't worry, everyone is feeling the same.

Join an SU Tour where you'll be shown key locations on campus. Most tours are general, but some are aimed at certain groups or areas. Browse through our Welcome pages to find out more.

Every student is assigned a Student Advisor in their department who is there to help if you have questions about your course or have difficulties which affect your studies. Find out more here.

If you are living in campus accommodation this is likely to be the campus Health Centre, but if not check the NHS website to find your nearest GP Surgery.

Check the NHS website for local NHS dentists who are accepting new patients. You may need to join a waiting list before you can get an appointment, so it's a good idea to register early!

Many banks offer special student bank account deals. It's a good idea to research your options and work out which one would be best for you. For handy tips and information on what's on offer, check out the Save the Student website.

If you plan to travel by train regularly then make sure you register online for a 16-25 Railcard to save 33% on all UK train travel. Over 25? Don't worry, mature students in full-time study are also eligible to apply!

Staying Organised

Register for a Student Beans and/or UNiDAYS account to get discounts on lots of brands.

Download the CircuitGo app if you plan to use the campus launderettes.

Use your calendar to track your assignment deadlines, lectures and other commitments.

Managing your time at Uni can be a tricky balance between academic, social and personal priorities. It's important to attend all your classes and lectures, but you also need to build in time for having fun and looking after yourself. Start as you mean to go to get into the best routine for you.

It might not be at the top of your 'must-read' list, but it does contain lots of important information and handy links to make Uni life smoother.

Explore Colchester

Colchester is widely recognised as Britain's first recorded town and oldest Roman capital. There's lots to see and do, and getting to know the area and finding some new favourite spots can help you to feel at home.

Don't feel like you need to explore everywhere at once. Pick somewhere you've never been before and make it your next little adventure.

International Student Extras

Moving to the UK from another country comes with a few extra things to think about. These don't all need to happen immediately, but getting them sorted early can make life easier.

Buy a UK SIM card for local data and calling to avoid additional charges. Check out advice on the best SIM-only deals on Save the Student.

Apply for a National Insurance number online if you plan to work part-time and have immigration permission to do so.

Set up a digital bank app for instant UK banking before your high-street account opens.

Invest in a high-quality waterproof coat and layers, as UK weather changes rapidly.

You don't have to complete this list all at once. University is a big change, so take things at your own pace. The important thing is knowing what you need to do and having a place to keep track of it.
