Each year in February, students put themselves forward to run for a full-time, paid position as a Student Leader. They campaign for votes and every Essex student will have an equal chance to 'vote like a student' and choose who they want to be elected into each of the 6 roles. This is the SU Leadership Election.

Mruda Kale

I’m Mruda Kale and I’m going to be in my third year studying BSc Psychology with Cognitive Neuroscience next year.

As someone who is deeply passionate about gender equality and equal gender representation, I believe that I am ideal candidate for this role.

I’ve been a part of the Women in STEM executive team for the last two years and have had the opportunity to learn and grow under the guidance of so many amazing women that have been a part of the executive team and past women’s officers. I’ve gotten to work with them to arrange different events to uplift people. I have learned what our society needs to a certain extent and how to effectively organize events to bring everyone together to tackle issues. I have been a part of several VTeam projects in my first year and balancing VTeam, with WiSTEM, and university work has given me a confidence in my ability to multitask and be able to give a 100% of myself to every project I take on. This experience has also given me an idea of how the student’s union is run and how to bring about change.

During the last two years, I have also learned how passionately I care about safety on campus and the voices of underrepresented people being heard. I want to work with the student body to provide our community with what it needs. I want to empower everyone regardless of their age, gender, race, etc. ensure their voice will be heard, work with women within the university to give them the confidence to voice their opinions and suggestions to the student union so the talents and ideas of many are heard and used.

Women should feel safe in our university environment, I often hear of women made to feel uncomfortable by harassment within the university, so it’s important to me to improve safety measures on campus. I will work to continue the training and awareness in our student bars, which means sexual harassment is dealt with sensitively and effectively. I will work with other officers to ensure we are equipped with the skills to help people that come forward and support them in the right way if need be.

If elected, I will do my absolute best to do this role justice.
