Each year in February, students put themselves forward to run for a full-time, paid position as a Student Leader. They campaign for votes and every Essex student will have an equal chance to 'vote like a student' and choose who they want to be elected into each of the 6 roles. This is the SU Leadership Election.

Together we can.

As a Black Representative Officer for the Student Union, my manifesto focuses on promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of university life. My goals are to create a safe and welcoming environment for black students on campus, amongst others.  Here is my page manifesto:

Introduction

I, as the black representative officer, am committed to working towards creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all black students on campus. I believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion are essential for the academic success and personal growth of every student. My manifesto outlines my plans to make our university more equitable and inclusive for black students.

Promoting Diversity

One of my primary goals is to promote diversity on campus. I aim to work closely with other student representatives to ensure that diversity is reflected in all aspects of student life. This includes supporting cultural and social events that celebrate black culture, identity, and advocating for more diverse representation in the curriculum. I also plan to work with the university administration to create more opportunities for black students to study abroad and engage in international experiences.

Increasing Representation

Another important goal is to increase representation of black students in leadership positions on campus. I plan to work with the student union and other organizations to create mentorship programs that support the development of black student leaders. I will also encourage black students to get involved in student government and other campus organizations and provide resources to help them succeed.

Black History Month

During Black History Month, I plan to work with other student organizations to organize events that showcase the achievements and contributions of black individuals throughout history. This may include guest speakers, film screenings, and cultural performances. I also plan to work with the school administration to ensure that black history is incorporated into the curriculum.

Cultural Festivals

Another way to celebrate diversity is through cultural festivals. I plan to work with other student organizations to organize events that celebrate the diverse cultures and traditions of black students. This may include food fairs, fashion shows, and music concerts. I also plan to reach out to local black-owned businesses and encourage their participation in these events.

Leadership and Professional Development

In addition to celebrating black culture and history, I plan to organize leadership and professional development activities that will benefit black students. This may include mentorship programs, workshops on career development, and networking events. I believe that providing these opportunities will help black students achieve their academic and professional goals and contribute positively to society.

Advocating for Policies

Finally, I will work to advocate for policies that address systemic injustice, and I will work to promote social justice on campus.

Conclusion

I believe that by working together, we can create a more welcoming and supportive environment for all students. I am committed to representing the interests of black students and advocating for policies that support their academic success and personal growth.

I look forward to working with the student union and other organizations to achieve these goals.
