For our 9th and penultimate event this term, we will be hosting a guest lecturer from the department, Yuchen Li, to present 'Streaming Desires: The Overconsumption of Musical Art'. Descriptor follows:
Do you remember the first time you listened to music, and do you remember the most recent time you did? Music as an art form that reorganizes temporality and spatiality used to bring us an alternative reality, in which we could be healed, reborn, and liberated. However, with the rise of streaming medias, music is no longer “another world for us” – music is slowly being incorporated into the daily mundane, becoming a part of the commute and the background sound of our everyday production.
What does this shift of music consumption mean for the listeners, and what does it mean for the development of musical art? This seminar explores this crisis of music through Adorno’s aesthetic theory and psychoanalysis, with infrastructural critique collected from the speaker’s experience as a musical artist in the music industry.
