Personal Tutoring - What to Expect

A personal tutor is a bit like a onesie. You might not know this; but everyone has one (everyone). So, what is a Personal Tutor? Well, a bit like a onesie, they’re there to support and comfort us all year round. Last year you, the students, told us that having an “excellent” Personal Tutor can have an incredibly positive impact on your studies, so this year the University is making sure you all have the best experience possible. Give this a little click to find out what to expect.

Last year, our members told us the massively positive effect having an “excellent” personal tutor can have on their studies and time at Essex.

This year the University is committing to ensuring all students have the best possible personal tutor experience. The University have made a commitment to all UG and PGT students regarding personal tutors for this year.

The following promises have been made:

  • Every single undergraduate and post graduate taught student at Essex will be allocated a personal tutor

  • Your personal tutor will arrange to meet with you at the beginning of your course

  • Your personal tutor will arrange to meet with you a minimum of 3 times a year either in small groups with other students or individually

  • Personal tutors will keep a record of meetings through the Universities LEAP portal.

Over the coming weeks, you should all get a chance to meet with your tutor. Remember they will be able to support you with any academic questions you have and be able to signpost you to other services like SWIS (Student well-being and Inclusivity Team) and SU Advice.

Next week we will be asking you to share your experiences of personal tutoring (both good, bad and indifferent) so we can let the University know whether or not you, our members are satisfied with personal tutoring at Essex.
